BSC Employees Recognized for Milestone Years of Service at State Ceremony
Dr. Sudhakar Jamkhandi (Bluefield State College Professor of English and Director of the Office of International Initiatives) and Dr. Angela Lambert (Dean/BSC School of the School of Nursing and Allied Health), were among a group of West Virginia public employees recognized for their careers of service. The December 14 ceremony at the Culture Center in Charleston was part of Public Service Recognition Week.
Bluefield State College Approved to Offer MBA Program, Spring 2022
Bluefield State College is celebrating another historic “first,” with Friday’s decision by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC) to approve the College’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. “Today’s decision by the Commission empowers Bluefield State College to launch the first graduate degree program in the College’s 126-year history,” noted BSC President Robin Capehart. “By offering a graduate program, Bluefield State can now begin the process for pursuing university status.”
BSC Representatives Participate in Small Communities, Big Solutions Conference
Dr. Michelle Taylor and Mr. Scott Pitt were key contributors to a diversity workforce panel discussion during the annual “Small Communities, Big Solutions Conference,” sponsored by the Alliance for Economic Development of Southern West Virginia. For the second consecutive year, Dr. Taylor (Department Chair & Associate Professor of Business at BSC’s W. Paul Cole, Jr. School of Business) moderated the panel discussion and Pitt (Educational Outreach Counselor/BSC Academic Success Center, BSC Safe Zone Initiatives Director and LGBTQ advocate) was a featured panelist.
BSC Receives American Water "Inclusion and Diversity Grant"
Bluefield State College is receiving an American Water “Inclusion and Diversity Grant” to support an implement a “Cultural Histories of Affrilachian People Event Series.” BSC was one of 13 organizations across West Virginia to receive awards from American Water and its subsidiaries, including West Virginia American Water. The awards provide support to organizations seeking to develop and implement programs, training, and community-related projects that focus upon promoting and fostering inclusion and diversity in communities across West Virginia.

BSC Engineering Technology Industry Advisory Board Established
Nearly a dozen selected industry leaders joined 30 Bluefield State College Engineering Technology students, faculty and administrators for the first meeting of Bluefield State College’s Industry Advisory Board (IAB), November 16. The new IAB will provide insight as the Engineering Technology programs’ curricula become even more precisely tuned to develop graduates that meet the skilled workforce needs in the field.
NCAA Announces Student-Athlete Certification Process Infractions at BSC
The NCAA Division II Committee on Infractions announced today that Bluefield State College had failed to monitor the student-athlete certification process. This announcement follows Bluefield State College’s discovery and self-reporting of infractions to the NCAA, and BSC’s cooperation with the NCAA throughout the process. The NCAA Committee on Infractions recognized BSC’s swift action to reorganize its compliance department and proactively secure an outside entity to conduct a compliance audit.

Retired BSC Engineering Technology Dean Frank Hart Receives ABET’s Highest Honor
Frank Hart, whose service to Bluefield State College spanned six decades, has been selected to receive ABET’s (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) most prestigious honor—the Linton E. Grinter Distinguished Service Award. According to ABET’s website, the Linton E. Grinter Distinguished Service Award “honors an individual whose rare commitment and enduring impact has made ABET a better organization.” The award is ABET’s highest honor.
Bluefield State College Receives $10,000 from the Ellucian Foundation to Support Students In Need
Bluefield State College was selected as a 2021 Progress, Accomplishment, Thriving, Hope (PATH) Scholarship recipient through the Ellucian Foundation. The PATH Scholarship program provides grants to higher education institutions to support students facing economic hardship. Bluefield State College received $10,000 which was distributed to 18 students to help with their academic expenses.

BSC Gamma Beta Phi Chapter Receives “Exemplary Chapter Award” from the Society’s National Headquarters
The Bluefield State College Chapter of Gamma Beta Phi has been selected as an “Exemplary Chapter (2020-2021)” by the Gamma Beta Phi Society’s National Headquarters. The BSC chapter is one of only 16 chapters nationally to receive the Society’s “Exemplary Chapter Award.”

BSC Presents First Ohio Valley Educational Scholarship Awards
Bluefield State College’ Katrina Davis and Ashlie Louden are the first recipients of the Ohio Valley Educational Opportunity Scholarship program. Bluefield State Provost Dr. Ted Lewis announced the scholarship program’s creation earlier this month in Wheeling. The College will provide $250,000 to students from the Ohio Valley to attend Bluefield State.

Local attorney Raeann Osborne will be a featured presenter at a September 13 program, “Child Abuse, Child Advocacy & Mandate Reporters,” at Bluefield State College. The program, which begins at 1 pm in the Basic Science Auditorium on BSC’s campus, is open to the public.
